Concentrated Juice: “Homer” Opener for the Wings.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly- 2008-2009 Wings Season Opener

Riddle me this: how do you know when your team has played badly? When the Toronto Maple Leafs played your game against you and schooled you like a bunch of Maroons.

Yes, the double entendre was intended. Yes, I realize the Maroons were Montreal. Moving on…

Good Bad and Ugly? I only saw Bad and Ugly. This was a total meltdown. This wasn’t nerves or trying to learn and work with the new lines/positions- this was just like watching an NHL team play pick up with a beer league team. In fact, V, 22, Matt- did you guys kidnap my boys and then put yourselves out there on the ice in red suits???? Something strange was afoot at the face off circle…

However, there was one Wing that didn’t get the memo to take the night off, so we’ll start with him.

The Good

Homer, Homes, Holms! When does the Word “Homer” always mean something good? When yelling it at the top of my lungs for No. 96. I don’t know why I’m faking optimism right now though….frankly, this game was nothing more than glass half full of poo. Aside from No. 96 doing IT ALL on the ice tonight, Detroit got their red clad Santa Clause looking behinds handed to them.

Tomas, thank you for doing everything you could to try keeping us into the game- I’m calling this now and owning it because I started to think it last spring: Holmstrom has been coming into his own as a team leader for a long time and he will be one of the team’s most visible leaders this year. Call me a HOMER all you want- as long as Tomas Holmstrom keeps playing the way he has been since last March, I wear the HOMER badge with HONOR.

And ps- his butt was NOT IN TURCO’S CREASE (no I will never get over that)

The Bad and the Ugly

Other than HOMER, this game was out as ugly as I have ever seen. I’m not gonna lie. Toronto. Yes Toronto. The Maple Leafs ran my boys in red around, Played OUR GAME. Grabowski and Antropov were on fire for Toronto.

And it stayed ugly for a long time. …Wings did not settle until the last 2 minutes of the second period, and then never really got it together. If it had just been the first period I would have guessed nerves, but Wings looked terrible. Plain and simple until 3 minutes left in the second period I wasn’t even sure it was the Wings out there. Vehyrehk, Matt and 22- account for your whereabouts…

WTF Ozzie: don’t you know your supposed to be perfect??? wtf wtf. To infinity.

Apparently the Wings forgot that you can play between the Blues- No Neutral Zone play whatsoever. The Leafs were “stacking the Blues”, again playing our game against us.

Stuart: head up brother, those boards are solid.

Someone tell Hossa we don’t dump and run in Detroit… and you better not have the SI Jinx now bro….

Where was Z?? Taking his Birthday off???? No, the last period doesn’t count.

The Crowd: Ok come, on D- I’m tired of hearing how quite you are….If your at the game- lets hear it. That said- I’m the sort of fan that keeps my mouth shut to intently watch until something good happens- maybe other people just don’t understand how intently we from the D follow and watch the game….

Ok, some other tiny moments of light in an abysmal game

Lilja: wow, showed some poise clearing from the net, not as much spinning, still (in the words of my Friend JimBro) “Fanning it”. That said, I can’t believe I had to ever give any Wing props for having to clear the net. (Who were these guys in the red suits pretending to be Red Wings?)

Franzen: I saw what you did in the first bro…. (He knows what I’m talking about)

Dats: your mini break away with 6 left in the 2nd… brilliant and breath taking. Thank you for just reminding me just how amazing you are, love seeing your flashes of genius, heck even Toskola thought you got him top shelf. Too bad you didn’t go top shelf…

Malts’ front of the net check on Blake- tough and legal.

Dan Cleary looked fresh, had a couple good SOGs.

I ‘m trying not to be too mad at Z, because Homer was solid, but come on Z- forget your birthday this was the HOME OPENER!

BTW- don’t all ya’ll start crying that Z and D need to be on the same line, because one game in no way tells us a dang thing, and I don’t want to hear about Wings needing big changes either- Wings need to settle and play their own game and gain some control… Gawd, we were just freaking asleep out there.

Ugh. Ok shake it off. Let’s see what happens on Saturday. Ugh.
