Filps signed

Two "Ts", Two "Ps" a wing for 5 more years.

Hell yes- hell yes HEDHS YES.

Straight from TSN:

The Detroit Red Wings have locked up another piece of their Stanley Cup Championship team.

The club signed restricted free agent forward Valtteri Filppula to a five-year, $15 million contract on Wednesday.

The 24-year old played in 78 games with Detroit last season, scoring 19 goals and adding 17 assists.

The third round pick in the 2002 Entry Draft has 29 goals in 25 assists in 155 career games in the NHL.”

WOW Kenny! I never NEVER expected this kind of deal for Filps.

Ok ok, now that I can breathe again and digest this info, seriously, I can't believe this kid got $3MM a year. the 1.9MM award given to Morrisson last week must have set the bar and given Filps some leverage.

I tell you what I think this sort of HUGE deal really means-

1. It means the Wings played incredibly fair: One more insane testament to the Wings org’s commitment to loyalty and growing its own.

2. It means that Ken-otye, Jim Nill, Stevie Y and Scottie Bowman have decided that this kid is the real deal, and has a great future.

3. It means the Kid better produce.

4. It means other unsigned players may suffer, notably Dmac, Cheli and Downey (If he hasn’t signed yet, and I think he hasn’t).

By my estimates, a $3MM/year deal puts the Wings dangerously close to the cap, if not over. Dmac certainly won’t get a one way offer at this point. I can’t imagine what it will do to Cheli. Where did Ken get the money? I dont think it affects Zetts and Franzen next year because I think Hossa will be gone, and probably Cheli too, so with an increased cap, there will likely be about 16-18MM to play with.

5. It means the KID better produce.
6. See No. 3, 5.

whew. I wonder, does Val- 2ts 2p- Filppula know how lucky he is?
